Can my Dell laptop be save?

Its a few years old-fashioned and it has trouble turning on. And even if it does turn on, its never for incredibly long...it shuts itself off after a few minutes. Whether its on mobile power or plugged in doesn't sort a difference. What should I do?

Answer:

Use Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org/) to see if its a software problem. If it runs OK from the CD, after just re-install doesn`t matter what OS you are using. If not, then you're looking ata hardware problem. If its a few years old-fashioned, probably best to get a unmarked one.
have you run a virus scan?
The reality that it shuts itself down after a few minutes indicates that it may be a heat problem. It's possible that the problem is as simple as a doomed to failure fan. It may be worth taking it to a shop and have them check for you. You can also download a program called Speedfan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php)... which will monitor the heat of your hardware. It might give you some clues if the problem is warmth related.
Will it still shut down if left surrounded by the bios setup? If yes than you defiantly get a hardware problem. Also try Windows safe mode. It does nouns like a hardware problem.
