I would close to to know if I buy a wireless modem for my laptop to use when away, could this also be used for my home computer when I am home and not requiring the laptop.

If that piece of hardware connects using USB port, next yes it'll work on both the laptop and desktop. Otherwise if it is a "cardbus adapter" or goes within the PCMCIA slot, then most promising your PC won't have that slot to know how to use that.
Yes you will just own to buy the PCI card with the antenna for your desktop. I hold lynksys and it works great.
